Media Statement

The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in Mpumalanga has issued a warning for possible flooding. This after a Tropical Cyclone Eloise was predicted by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) in Mozambique. The Department says this may cause heavy rainfall in four Provinces, including Mpumalanga on Sunday.

The heavy rainfall may result in flooding that causes damage to the road infrastructure and bridges and houses with a possibility for the displacement of communities. The Department says communities must be on high alert to prevent life threatening risks. “Preliminary predictions by the SAWS shows that Mpumalanga will experience heavy rains on Sunday as a result of Tropical Cyclone Eloise. This is likely to increase water levels in our rivers and dams, and may be a threat to those who cross them at that stage,” Mr Msibi cautioned.

He says roads are likely to be slippery and therefore road-users should drive with caution. He added that communities must also avoid walking under power lines to prevent lightning.

Disaster Management Units in the Municipalities have been activated to respond to emergency cases. Mr Msibi says communities must report  emergency cases to their local municipalities. He says the Department’s Disaster Toll Free Number: 0800 507 202 is available to report incidents.

Ends.
