The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in Mpumalanga has convened an indaba to improve the socio economic status of rural communities through the agrarian revolution. The agrarian revolution is a programme designed to use land and other related farming mechanisms to intensify the fight against the high levels of poverty and food insecurity in rural areas.
The indaba will focus on government’s poverty alleviation programmes, such as the Sustainable Comprehensive Rural Development Programme and the Rural Development Strategies and explore funding models to achieve the objectives of the agrarian revolution.
Traditional leaders are expected to play a critical role in the programme, and the indaba is designed to bring them together with academics and farming experts to carve practical measures that will improve the livelihoods of rural communities.
The MEC for COGTA in Mpumalanga, Mr Mandla Msibi, the Chairperson of the Mpumalanga Provincial House of Traditional Leaders (MPHTL), Inkhosi Sandile Ngomane, academics and agricultural experts will address the indaba. The audience is limited in order to comply with the COVID-19 regulations.
