MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Mr Mandla Msibi has raised funds to assist two learners to register at Universities. This after the plight of the two learners was reported to him during a visit to two Secondary schools at Pienaar, outside Mbombela. The visit was part of school re-opening on the first day. The learners, namely Sokhela Ngwasi and Nonthethelelo Sambo struggled to raise registration funds after obtaining distinctions at Grade 12 in 2019.

Mr Msibi intervened by raising registration funds for Nonthelelo to study Bachelor of Accounting at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth and for Sokhela to study at the University of Johannesburg. Both obtained distinctions at Grade 12 in 2019. Mr Msibi urged learners at Bonginhlanhla and Mayibuye Secondary schools, during a visit to monitor the re-opening of the schools, to emulate the two top achievers. “We need to produce Chartered Accountants in this area. If the two learners can pass with distinctions, you too can. I learnt that their academic aspirations may be hindered by lack of money for registration. I am saying that they are going to register at their respective Universities. We will provide them with the funds to register,” Mr Msibi said much to the applause of the learners in both schools.

Mr Msibi is a recepient of an award by students from the University of Cape Town in recognition of his role to assist students from disadvantaged families to pursue their studies at various Universities in the country.

Meanwhile, Mr Msibi announced the construction of four new classes at the Mayibuye Secondary School. He said construction will commence soon and urged learners to protect them against vandalism.

Ends.
