MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in Mpumalanga, Mr Mandla Msibi is on a mission to engage distressed municipalities with a view to diagnose challenges that inhibit their effective functionality. This is in line with the Provincial Executive Council’s resolution for the Department to develop a new support plan aimed at resolving challenges affecting the distressed municipalities.
So far, Mr Msibi has engaged the leadership of Lekwa, Dr JS Moroka, Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme and Thaba Chweu Local Municipalities. Mr Msibi expressed hope that the engagements will position the Department to provide the proper support required to improve the functionality of the municipalities. “Section 154 of the Constitution of the Republic charges the Provincial Government and the National Government with the responsibility to support municipalities. These visits are a perfect opportunity for us as COGTA to determine the inhibiting factors of service delivery. The outcome of our engagements will inform the nature of the support that we must provide as directed by the Executive Council,” Mr Msibi said.
On Tuesday, Mr Msibi is expected to engage Msukaligwa, City of Mbombela and Victor Khanye Local Municipalities. Mr Msibi says the Department will be able to come up with new solutions as part of the new support plan.
Ends.
