Several incidents of fatalities in the rivers and dams have been recorded in Mpumalanga during the December 2018 and Mid-February 2019 period. The fatalities occurred mainly in Ehlanzeni District and the victims are young boys and adult males.

The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in Mpumalanga, is seriously concerned about these fatalities. MEC for COGTA, Mr Speed Mashilo says one fatality is way too many.

The Department has organized a media briefing to share initiatives aimed at reducing the fatalities as part of Disaster Management. Mr Mashilo will address the briefing. Represantatives of the Mpumalanga House of Traditional Leaders (MPHTL) and the South African Police Services (SAPS) will also be in attendance.
