Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Ms. Gabisile Shabalala today visited the families of the six people who perished in a head on collission between two sedans that took place on Friday, 14 June 2019 on R544 Road between Emalahleni and Verena.

Mpumalanga Province recorded 44 fatalities resulting from 209 road crashes during the Easter period last year. This was a reduction of 30% as compared to the same period in 2017. Furthermore 40 road fatal crashes occurred in 2018 while in 2017 there were 30 fatal crashes and this represents an increase of 25%.

MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Ms. Gabisile Shabalala has reiterated her call to motorists to be extremely cautious following a horrific head on collision that claimed six lives around 20h00 today (14 June 2019). The six were declared dead at the scene.

Four people died around 04h00 today on N11 Road between Middelburg and Groblersdal near Doornkop when a side swipe collision occurred between a minibus and an articulated truck. The minibus immediately overturned on the side of the road. The deceased include three men and one woman.

One woman was killed after being involved in crash that occurred between two sedans and a motorbike on the same road on Sunday. Another man died after being allegedly shot by the police on the same day few hours after the crash.

"Leaving in a shack was like being buried alive, now I will be able to live like other people in this community. My life has been very difficult over many years. I have suffered a lot in my life due to this bad situation. I have secured a family through the department. From today, I will live in a conducive house."

A multiple vehicle collision that involves a truck and two sedans has led to the death of four people last night around 19h30 on R38 Road between Manzana and Umjindi. It is believed that one of the vehicles lost control and collided with a truck from the side before colliding head on with another sedan.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Pat Ngomane has welcomed the sentencing of Alexander Mohoebi, a Lesotho National who murdered a traffic officer in 2016. Today, the Pretoria High Court sitting in Delmas Magistrate Court has sentenced Alexander Mohoebi to life imprisonment for the murder of Bongani Nkumba who was a traffic officer in the Mpumalanga Province for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison.

Excessive speeding, reckless and negligent driving are one of the major causes of road crashes in the province. The aftermath of these crashes is usually death and injury. What is sad though is that these offences are avoidable. Therefore, heftily punishing the offenders will greatly contribute towards reducing death and injury on the road.

Three people have died around 07h00 this morning on R40 Road towards Hazyvview when a light delivery vehicle (bakkie) overturned. The three perished at the scene.

One person with critical injuries was airlifted to Robs Ferreira Hospital in Mbombela.

Other four were seriously injured while 17 other people got away with injuries ranging from mild to moderate. They are receiving treatment at Matikwane and Themba hospitals in Bushbuckridge and Kabokweni respectively.

The cause of the crash is not yet known. The case of culpable homicide has been registered with the police.
